`de` Als Carlos in Goethes Trauerspiel zeigt Klimt den Hofschauspieler Josef Lewinsky auf der Bühne. Stockdunkel ist es um den Dargestellten herum, nur sein blasses Gesicht, der Kragen und die Manschetten treten hervor. Ein antiker Dreifuß, aus dessen Rauch eine lachende Frau entsteigt, rahmt die Szene. In Händen trägt die Frau eine Maske, während über ihr Dionysos, der Gott des Weins, schwebt. Diesem war das erste Theater der Welt geweiht. Klimts Gemälde entsteht im Auftrag der Gesellschaft für vervielfältigende Kunst als Illustrationsvorlage für das Buch Das k. k. Hofburgtheater seit seiner Begründung, das die Geschichte des Wiener Theaterwesens dokumentiert. Der Maler stellt somit das Hofburgtheater in die Tradition des antiken griechischen Theaters.
