Piece of woven fabric, using traditional Latvian patterns from the Zemgale region. Woven by Anna Apinis, circa 1970 on a hand made draw loom using 17 shafts. It was made for her daughter as part of a Latvian national costume when her daughter finished Latvian high school. The loom on which this fabric was woven was made for Anna by fellow survivors of World War II, in Memmingen, a displaced persons camp in Germany with wood scavenged from bombed-out ruins. It was designed by Anna's husband Ervins. Anna used the loom to weave traditional Latvian designs using threads gathered by unravelling old scraps of fabric. Anna brought the loom with her to Australia and continued to weave Latvian designs on it.

Notice issued by the Office of the High Commissioner for Australia on 12/8/1963 to John Myerscough advising that a reservation has been made for he and his family on the P&O Orient Line the SS Canberra departing 20/11/1963 from Southampton to Australia. The letter was part of the application and acceptance process for the Myerscough's to migrate from England to Australia in 1963 and kept as a souvenir of their migration experiences.
John and Doreen Myerscough migrated to Australia from Liverpool in England with their daughters Jill and Julie on 20 November 1963. Searching for greater opportunities and with savings behind them, they took advantage of the Australian Government's 'Nest Egg Scheme'. They were also assisted ten pound migrants. The family sailed on the P&O Orient Line SS Canberra and settled in Melbourne where the climate was said to be similar to that of England. They transferred directly to Altona Migrant Hostel and ended up staying there (most unusually) for two years. John worked on the Geelong-Melbourne oil pipeline, in construction, and as a sub-contractor all over Victoria installing ceilings. Doreen had another baby Paul and later worked at Rothman's cigarette factory in Brooklyn. The couple purchased a block of land in Melton, promoted as a growth suburb, but the potential for isolation, as well as the couple's inability to really get ahead, made them decide to give up the dream and return to England. They paid their full fares, sold their land and returned to Liverpool on the P&O Orient Line SS Oriana on 21 January 1966. However, the challenges they experienced inspired them to strive and succeed, and John and Doreen have subsequently become frequent tourist visitors to Australia.

This early cylinder seal bears two stylized horned quadrupeds running in a row. These creatures possibly represent a sacred herd, animals raised at a temple for sacrifice. Cylinder seals are cylindrical objects carved in reverse (intaglio) in order to leave raised impressions when rolled into clay. Seals were generally used to mark ownership, and they could act as official identifiers, like a signature, for individuals and institutions. A seal’s owner rolled impressions in wet clay to secure property such as baskets, letters, jars, and even rooms and buildings. This clay sealing prevented tampering because it had to be broken in order to access a safeguarded item. Cylinder seals were often made of durable material, usually stone, and most were drilled lengthwise so they could be strung and worn. A seal’s material and the images inscribed on the seal itself could be protective. The artistry and design might be appreciated and considered decorative as well. Cylinder seals were produced in the Near East beginning in the fourth millennium BCE and date to every period through the end of the first millennium BCE.

This small bronze is likely representative of a style that spread in a period before the creation of the classic Sukhothai style in the middle of the 14th century. There are reasons to look for stylistic sources in the Martaban region. The possibility remains, however, that this image representa a substyle that did not develop until the 2nd half of the 15th century.

Latch Needles used with 'Dubied' knitting machine, used by Edda Azzola from 1950 to 2000 for making commercial and personal clothing. This 'Dubied' knitting machine was brought to Australia from Italy in the 1950s by an Italian migrant woman and then sold to the Edda, who had migrated to Melbourne from Italy in 1955. Edda used it to supply a Collingwood knitting mill with finely finished clothes for sale to Melbourne department stores, until the factory closed in 1974. It was then used to make family clothes.
The machine is in similar condition as when first purchased by Edda, except for two modifications made by her husband: wooden blocks under the cast iron frame to raise its height so that she was relieved from constant bending over; and the removal of a flexible arm which moved as the carriage was shunted across - one day nearly clamping her son's leg! So for safety reasons, he made a new two-handed carriage which she also found much easier to use while standing to operate the machine.

Issue No 1 of the 'Kodak Staff Service Bulletin', 1941.
The Kodak Staff Service Bulletin was issued during World War II by Kodak Australasia Pty Ltd to its employees and their families giving news of war efforts both at home and abroad. Each issue, compiled by volunteer staff of the Kodak Comforts Fund, featured Kodak employee enlistments by branch, casualties, comforts (aid from the Kodak Comforts Fund) and extracts from letters received by employees serving in the War. Later issues include discharges, promotions, cartoons and general news.
The complete series of the bulletin, Issues 1 to 40, ran from 1941 to 1946. These copies were originally housed in the Kodak Business Archive, separated into Issues 1-14 (1941 - 1943), Issues 15-30 (1943 - 1944) and Issues 31-37 (1944-1946).
This document is part of the Kodak collection of products, promotional materials, photographs and working life artefacts collected from Kodak Australasia in 2005, when the Melbourne manufacturing plant at Coburg closed down.

Alternative Name: 'Shokendai' [in Japanese]
Small portable and collapsible wooden table, bought around 1970 by Masumi Hiraga Jackson and brought by her to Australia when she migrated in 1985. Table is made from Japanese 'paulownia'. It is used especially for 'utai', narrative song for Japanese Noh Theatre whereby the Noh song book is placed on the table for practising - Masumi used the table for this purpose since 1970. The table is also used for Noh recital and chorus to support their songbooks on stage. Noh is an important form of classical musical drama performed in Japan since the 14th century. The principal actor, and sometimes minor actors wear masks. All performers, including the chorus singers and musicians, carry fans. Masumi Hiraga studied Noh Theatre at Toyo University in the 1950s and continues to learn and practise the art at the Hosho School of Noh in Japan. She performs in Japan and Australia.
Masumi Hiraga Jackson was born in Nirasaki, Japan in 1935, one of ten children. Her mother Kino was a skilled weaver who wove and sewed silk kimono, a highly regarded skill. Masumi studied at universities in Tokyo (Japanese cultural studies) and Canberra (English and linguistics) and in 1984 married an Australian. She immigrated to Melbourne in 1985 but sadly her husband died two years later. Masumi decided to remain in Australia and immersed herself in traditional Japanese cultural practices such as Noh theatre, Ikebana and Shimotske paper doll-making. She performs and instructs these art forms in Australia and overseas, and returns to Japan every year to see her family, undertake Ikebana lessons, practise her Noh performance and to purchase materials for doll-making.

'Facett' 7b AT1.1 Lid hearing device charger manufactured by Blamey Saunders in Melbourne and launched in 2018.
This model took the learning from AT1 and tries to make it portable. The solution was to remove the outer rim. The form still has an asymmetrical geometry.
The 'Facett' hearing devices were designed by Melbourne designer Leah Heiss who was inspired by the beauty of Museum Victoria's geology collection. Launched in 2018, they were carefully designed to be a hearing device that looks good and that users want to wear. Issues addressing stigma, useability, access and cost make this collection even more unique in the hearing device industry at this time.

Photograph of MF186 Harvester.
Part of a collection of photographs, moving film, artefacts, documents and trade literature relating to Massey Ferguson (Aust.) Ltd and its predecessors. The Australian operations of this company were originally founded by Hugh V. McKay, at Ballarat, in the late 1880s, and by 1895 was operating as the Sunshine Harvester Works. After relocating to Braybrook Junction (later renamed 'Sunshine') on the western outskirts of Melbourne, during 1904-1907, the business rapidly developed into the largest agricultural implement works in the southern hemisphere. In 1930, H.V. McKay merged with the Australian operations of the Canadian firm, Massey Harris Ltd, of Toronto, becoming H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd. In 1955, this company was fully absorbed into the growing multinational corporation that became Massey Ferguson Ltd in 1958.

The large eyes and the round shape of the face with its full cheeks convey a youthful impression, but there are no indicators of the gender of the person portrayed. The face has several irregularities; the level of the pupils, the heights of the ridges above the eyes, and the length of the brows differ from another.

This painting, Walters manuscript leaf W.876, dating to the 12th century AH/AD 18th, depicts 3 women seated within 2 leafy bowers. The Nayika (female lover or heroine) sits alone, while her 2 female companions, known as sakhis, converse in the other bower. The painting may represent Utka nayika, a classification for heroines who are awaiting or yearning for their lovers. Often, they are shown on a bed of flowers or leaves that they have prepared in expectation of meeting their lovers. In the landscape are animals engaged in various activities. An outcrop of rocks in the distance forms a horizon, above which is a blue sky streaked with light gray or white washes to suggest a thin layer of high clouds.

Found in the wreckage of Bill Coppinger's shed, this is the remnants of a standard 8-metre Stanley builder's tape measure. It has been transformed by fire into a fragile ribbon of burned steel.
The shed, house and the contents of the property at Mount Disappointment were destroyed in the Kilmore East Bushfire on 7 February 2009.
This is part of the Victorian Bushfires Collection, which includes a number of interviews with Bill Coppinger and a large range of fire affected artefacts from his destroyed home.

Letter from the Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration (ICEM) to Dorothea Huber, Kirchgasse 14, Innsbruck, Austria, dated 8 July 1959. It relates to a request from Dorothea for information regarding migration to Australia. It was amongst the small number of personal possessions brought to Australia by Dorothea [formerly Huber and nee Freitag] when she migrated from Austria to Melbourne in November 1959.
Born in 1929 near Graz, Austria, Dorothea was a proficient recreational skier and part of a volunteer rescue team in Switzerland. She lived and worked primarily as a mill weaver and seamstress in England, Switzerland and Austria before migrating to Australia from Austria on 30 November 1959, arriving on the Cogedar Line ship 'Flaminia' on 31 December. She settled in Melbourne and married fellow Austrian Johann Dunzinger whom she met at Broadmeadows migrant hostel. They had a daughter Caroline and lived in various Melbourne suburbs boarding and renting before building a home in Kalorama. The couple divorced in1978. Dorothea worked hard all her life, owning a boutique clothing shop in Camberwell at one stage but primarily as a textile outworker and factory worker trying to make ends meet. She died in 2001.

This is a sepia postcard of a floral arrangement in the Carlton Gardens, circa 1917. The postcard, which is unused, was made in Germany and depicts a shield, a kangaroo and an emu above the words 'Advance Australia'.
'Advance Australia' was the motto of the Australian Natives Association, which held ten displays at the Exhibition Building between 1905 and 1926. The Australian Natives' Association was established in Melbourne in 1871 as a non-partisan and non-sectarian friendly society for Australian-born, white men seeking to shape Australia's nationhood and identity. The ANA was a strong advocate for Federation and became an advocate for White Australia. It was a staunch supporter of trade protection and immigration restriction, and Prime Minister Alfred Deakin was a member.

Personal letter of reference for Stanley Hathaway written by L.J. Fleming, England, 23 November, 1949. The letter speaks highly of Stanley's many personal qualities in support of future employment applications.
Stanley and Lucy (nee Simmons) Hathaway and their daughter Hazel survived World War II in heavily bombed Coventry, England, remaining there until 1946. They attended the Victory in Europe celebrations there on 8 May 1945. The Hathaways relocated to Buckinghamshire (where second daughter Merle was born in 1948) and Hampshire between 1946 and 1951, finally deciding to migrate to Australia. Their application took nearly two years to be confirmed under the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme, correspondence indicating that Stanley's trade qualifications were not immediately accepted for the Commonwealth Nomination Scheme. They lived and toured England in a caravan until finally departing on the New Australia, 17 November, 1951.
The Hathaways first stayed at the Bathurst Migrant Camp in New South Wales before being relocated to a housing commission estate in Ballarat, Victoria. Within six months they had purchased a block of land in Wendouree, living in a caravan while their house was built. The family became active members of the local Ballarat community, with Lucy working for the newly established McCallum House Centre for Retarded Children at Sebastopol and continued her strong interest in the Brownies and Girl Guides associations. They later relocated to Melbourne and then retired to Buninyong.

Late Period interest in the past is clearly demonstrated in this work, whose composition, clothing, and poses all recall Old Kingdom and Middle Kingdom works. Details such as the crisp precision of the carving and the presence of personal names date the piece to the Late Period. It shows its owners, Ankh-ef-en-Sekhmet and his wife Hathor-em-hat, to the viewer's left. Their daughter, with close-cropped hair, kneels at center. The three are entertained by a harpist named Psamtik-seneb, who "plays the harp for the good of their spirits everyday." The harpist's name means "may King Psamtik be healthy." The tomb from which this relief came was located in Saqqara, the necropolis (cemetery) of Memphis, an important center for the worship of the goddesses Sakhmet and Hathor, whose names are incorporated into the tomb owners' names.

Toy metal lampshade. Was originally in the breakfast room of the McArthur Doll's House.
Part of a dolls' house, built around 1920 by Neil McArthur for his much younger half-sister Elizabeth (Beth) Twycross, born in 1917. Neil made the doll's house out of found materials including cigar boxes; he also made many of the furnishings in the doll's house. Some of the contents of the doll's house may date back to the 1860s, played with by ancestor Charlotte Twycross; most date to either the 1920s or the 1940s-50s. In the early 1950s the donor was given the spruced-up doll's house as a birthday present by her parents. In later years her own daughter later added items, although she wasn't allowed to play due to its fragility.

A maidenly and surprisingly modest Athena bends her head forward. Perched on her hand is an owl, the emblem of her wisdom. Her war-like aspect is downplayed here, although her upraised left hand once held a staff or spear, and she wears a helmet crowned by a sphinx. The simplicity of the figure heightens appreciation of the artist's skill.

The statue represents the charioteer Psametik-mry-Re. He stands holding a large figure of the god Osiris, Lord of the Underworld. Such "Osirophorus" figures were popular during the Egyptian Late Period (7th-4th century BCE). They were placed in temples to guarantee the participation of the person depicted in the rituals for the gods.

Colour glass lantern slide of an illustration depicting progress in air, sea and road travel between circa 1900 and circa 1940. Made by Alex. Gunn & Sons, Melbourne Victoria, circa 1940s.
One of a set of over 420 lantern slides, used by lecturer Walter S. Binks, a popular psychology and vocational guidance lecturer based in Melbourne, Victoria. Binks gave lectures throughout Australia in the 1930s and 1940s. Binks advertised his lectures as associated with the Australasian Opportunity League or Universal Opportunity League.
Purchased by the donor at an opportunity shop. The collection was stored in three wooden trays (two compartments in each tray), and 95 slides stored separately. Many of the slides were produced in Melbourne from images and cuttings presumably supplied by Binks.

Black and white photograph, dating from World War I, showing a landscape view of Darjeeling. Most likely taken in 1917 when Trezise was on leave in India given the long journey to Darjeeling from the nearest port.
Part of a collection of World War I photographs associated with the service of Lionel Knox Trezise (service no. 14340), father of the donor John Trezise. Lionel was a 'reliving postmaster and telegraphist' when he enlisted on 22 March 1916. He was placed in the 1st Australian Wireless Signal Squadron as a sapper, serving with the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force. During his service he apparently took photographs in India, Sri Lanka and Mesopotamia (Iraq and neighbouring regions). After returning to Australia in 1919 he married and became a public servant. He died in 1972. Lionel's brother John Gordon (Jack) Trezise also served in World War I (service no. 5105). He enlisted on 2 March 1916 while a 26-year-old shop assistant in Broken Hill, and was killed in action in France on 1 June 1918.

1 Penny coin, Australia, 1916.
Mint: Calcutta.
During World War I, from 1916 until 1918, the Calcutta Mint was employed to strike Australian bronze coins. The coins bear the mint mark I (for India) below the lower scroll.
This coin was acquired by Museums Victoria in a collection of belongings from World War I soldier Private Michael Ward, within suitcase HT 48377. Ward, service no. 4138, was an unmarried 26-year-old farm labourer born in Eddington, Victoria, when he enlisted to serve in World War I on 26 April (attestation 21 March) 1916. He served in the 29th and later the 38th Battalions, and was wounded in knees and hand on 15 April 1918, at Buire in the Somme region of France. He was sent to England for treatment and returned to Australia in late 1918. His discharge from service was delayed until 20 February 1921 because he was still undergoing treatment for war wounds. Michael Ward lived to 72 years of age.

Extracts from Alfred Jacob Miller’s original text, which accompanied his images of Native Americans, are included below for reference. The Green River of Wyoming (Oregon Territory to Miller) winds through spectacular mountains to join the Colorado River. Miller trekked through the Rockies for one season and noted many difficulties, especially for those who tried to climb the highest peaks, only to experience "giddiness and headache, attended with vomiting," and turn back.He has included a camp of Indians en route to the rendezvous near the shore of what might well be Frémont Lake, a romantic touch emphasizing the harmony between unspoiled nature and natural man."The sun did not appear to shine so brightly to us the balance of the day," Miller recalls, lamenting the loss of one of his friends. Extracted from "The West of Alfred Jacob Miller" (1837).In July 1858 William T. Walters commissioned 200 watercolors at twelve dollars apiece from Baltimore born artist Alfred Jacob Miller. These paintings were each accompanied by a descriptive text, and were delivered in installments over the next twenty-one months and ultimately were bound in three albums. Transcriptions of field-sketches drawn during the 1837 expedition that Miller had undertaken to the annual fur-trader's rendezvous in the Green River Valley (in what is now western Wyoming), these watercolors are a unique record of the closing years of the western fur trade.

This translucent blue blown glass bottle, also known as a candlestick unguentarium, sits on a flat base and has a globular shaped body. The cylindrical neck tapers up towards the flat disk rim. Vessels of this shape, ranging from smaller, palm sized examples all the way up to larger versions such as this one, would have been used to hold valuable oils and perfumes. This form became popular beginning in the 2nd century CE and examples have been found throughout the Roman Empire, from France and Spain to sites in the East such as Dura Europas.

Information leaflet issued by the P&O Orient Line on the architects, artists and designers of all areas of the ship 'Oriana'. The leaflet was part of the Myerscough's package of information materials as they prepared to migrate to Australia from England in 1963 and kept as a souvenir of their shipboard experiences.
